Pro Evolution Soccer’s gameplay remains largely the same with this year’s entry, and I’m actually thankful for that. Still, it’s important that you go into this purchase knowing exactly what you’re getting - or you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Developers at Konami are likely hard at work to make the next-gen entry the best game it can be, and pushed this out at a price no one could complain about. So much of this game needs to be overhauled, at least visually, if the franchise wants to keep up with its football sim contemporaries. I was appalled that last year’s awful Master League cutscenes were the exact same in this game, with no changes whatsoever.īut then again, it’s easy to see why. Simply look at the screenshots in this review and see for yourself. From a visual standpoint alone, there’s nothing that differentiates PES 2021 from PES 2020 apart from a change in aesthetic colour. It came with changes and gameplay updates large enough to justify a new entry, but that’s exactly what this game lacks. PES 2020 came with an all-new ball feel, big Master League changes and Juventus, stolen away from the FIFA franchise. Yes, there are a few differences here and there - large enough to be felt when you’re on the pitch, but small enough that I’m glad the game comes at a discount.

‘Season Update’ is absolutely right, because PES 2021 plays like it’s nothing more than just another patch to last year’s game. Every mode I tried, and every game I played through - I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d done it all before. I had immediate deja vu upon opening this game up for the first time.

You can now utilise an interactive dialogue system and also deeply customise your manager, with the option being available to choose a real-life manager as the model. Master League has been promised a revamp, so solo players might not feel entirely left out this time. In terms of gameplay, not much has admittedly changed (though annual football games tend to just iterate than innovate these days) with there just being tweaks to trapping, context-sensitive kick accuracy, “adaptive player interaction system that recreates player personalities on the pitch”, and also the ability to intentionally foul opposition. Konami will also be pushing to adopt a more eSports-orientated angle with PES (hence the name) and have announced that they will be introducing a Matchday mode that “will allow fans to come together for weekly events to compete in the biggest matches and secure victory against their rivals.”

They are basically saying the name of the same sport twice with that new name, but everyone will probably still call it PES nonetheless.

PES 2020 will be officially dubbed eFootball PES 2020, which would be eFootball Pro Evolution Soccer 2020 to give it its full name. The latest edition of Pro Evolution Soccer will also bring about a slight name change for the franchise, Konami has announced at E3 2019.
